Primary Packaging

Editor’s note: This post was originally published on OMNI in September 2019 and has been updated to reflect the latest information.

What Is Primary Packaging?

There are three different types of packaging: primary packaging, secondary packaging, and tertiary packaging. Examples of Secondary packaging include cardboard boxes or containers. Tertiary packaging includes bundling, wrapping pallets, and shipping containers. Each describes a different scale or level of packaging.

Primary packaging is the article that touches the finished product and is the first layer that stands between the product and the consumer. In consumer packaged products, examples of primary packaging could be the bottle holding your juice, the can that holds your soda, or the wrapper encasing your candy bar.

Purpose of Primary Packaging Equipment

Primary packaging equipment is how the product gets into its retail packaging. This process is critical, and with the latest technological advancements, equipment is more sophisticated than ever. Whether your customer is filling infant formula, soda cans, cereal, or any other grocery store item, the pressure for better, faster, more flexible, and cheaper equipment has never been higher. With market changes and continuous pressure for more graphical and dynamic packaging, packaging solutions must be flexible and dynamic as well.

Primary packaging equipment has direct contact with the final product and needs to be gentle enough to package cartons of perishable goods, yet powerful enough to work quickly and efficiently.

Plastic Parts for Primary Packaging Equipment

Many leaders of the packaging industry trust plastic and polyurethane parts for their packaging equipment. Packaging design and display packaging vary, so it’s important the equipment is versatile and can handle multiple platforms. One packaging solution may require a fragile package and delicate handling, while another may be filling pouches that are dropped directly into a secondary package. Using custom-molded polyurethane parts allows for this versatility.
